Ranajit on Tapan

Receiving from some common friends, I read the recent issue of Frontier, publishing an obituary of Professor Tapan Roy Chowdhury, better known amongst us as Tapan-da. I am a graduate of Indian Statistical Institute, and during 1963 to 1971, have known Tapan-da and Rita-di almost like our family members. During our B. Stat. course, Tapan-da taught us some classes of our Geology course, but his elder-brotherly attitude towards us will remain most memorable throughout our life. Myself as well as my wife, Bandana (who was also a Research Fellow at ISI), spent numerous hours of evenings having intellectual “addas” at the residence of Rita-di and Tapan-da in the Institute’s residential campus. Even after leaving ISI, whenever we visited the Institute, Tapan-da and Rita-di were generous to invite us for their homely dinners instead of the mundane guest-house food. Tapan-da will be remembered amongst us not only for his valuable contributions that changed the evolutionary history of early palaeontogological life of Gondowanaland of India, but also for his intent interest in the well-being of students and scholars with whom he came into contact, even when they are from disciplines different from his interest.

I congratulate Ms. Bandyopadhyay for her informative article in Frontier, and on behalf of myself and Bandana, we send our hearty condolence to Rita-di for this loss. Tapan-da surely is no longer physically among us, but his memory will be ever-present with us, and surely will give us comfort when we will remember the pleasantries he offered us through long-term association with him. With our deepest regards for Rita-di and her family, sincerely – Ranajit and Bandana M Chakraborty

NOTE: If possible, please forward this comment to Mrs. Roychowdhury (better known amongst us as Rita-di)
